Strategies for Parents to Become Involved in School
Today, parents have busy lives with their jobs, daily errands, children and many other circumstances that can hinder their ability to become more involved with their children's education. The importance of maintaining a steady and significant involvement with your children's school can greatly affect them in either a positive or negative way, depending on how important your children observe the school's importance to you. Many parents want to be involved and be there as much as they can, however, with busy schedules it can be a challenge to meet that goal. Listed below are suggestions, or strategies, that could be useful for parents to become more involved in their children's education.
- Anytime you can, volunteering is greatly appreciated by all teachers and even if it is only 1 hour per week, teachers will recognize your dedication and commend you for it. This will help generate positive reinforcement for not only your child as a student, but the rest of the class as well. [1]
- Take time every night to read at least 20 to 30 minutes to your child at home. Reading aloud can help them relate to how words are said and give them more confidence when they do it on their own. A great suggestion is to read a story they like before they go to bed so it is has them thinking about it before they sleep keeping their brains working into the night. [3]
- Many schools have "Career Days", or something similar. Try to make time for those because it allows you to express your interest in the importance of being successful to young minds, and your own child will be proud you made the effort to show how important education can be. [1]
- Likely the most prominent way to be involved in your children's education is to be a part of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and attend weekly meetings to keep up to date on the school's goals, objectives and achievements. The faculty and the school system will see those who attend and recognize your dedication to your children's education. [1]
